Barse

Barse is the naming ceremony for the newborn. When the mother to be is in her 7th month of the pregnancy 'Wadi Bharne' celebration is done. In the morning relatives and friends are invite for lunch called "Dohale Jewan". The pregnant woman is served lunch in a silver plate. Around the plate a rangoli is drawn. Then the Haldi-Kumkum vidhi is performed. Special delicacies are prepared. In the plate two bowls filled with "Basundi" and covered with puries are kept. In one of them is a "silver rupee" and the other is a "angthi"(ring). It is presumed that what she touches first will decide whether it will be a boy or a girl. The "angthi" is for girl and the "a silver rupee" is for boy. In the evening the would be mother is dressed up like "Apsara", "Shakuntala" ,or one of the goddess etc . Then close relatives perform aarti for the would be mother and give her gifts. This is called "Wadi Bharne". After this is done at husband's house the would be mother goes to her mother's place for the delivery.

After the baby is born on third day there is a puja of "tijora" for which coconut choy ( sweet made out of fresh coconut and jaggery) is offered to lord and is distributed to the kids in the house. On the fifth day Java and sixth day Satvi puja is performed. A blank paper, a pen and a ruler is kept near the puja. It is believed that the Satvidevi writes the fate of the child on this paper.

On the 12th day there is naming ceremony called "Barse". Sun, moon and two dolls are drawn on small square shaped cloth dipped in haldi and are stucked to the wall outside the front door. Gul and chana are used to hold the cloth. Haldi and kumkum is applied to it. A paalna i.e cradle is kept over the rangoli and is decorated with flowers. Four "batasa"(sugar candy) are kept near the legs of the cradle. Jewellery made out of thread dipped in haldi water is put around babies hands, neck and feet. Vanayee pala bhivdan : Vanayeecha pala ( leaves from vanayee plant) is moved over the baby to do the bhivdan vidhi ( a ceremony performed so that the baby is not afraid of anything.). While doing this mother says

" shalet jatana ghabaru nakos,
mamakade jatana ghabru nakos."
The mother pretends to wash baby clothes and other ladies ask her,
"balantin balantin kay karates".
Then the mother says,
"Balachi baloti dhute".

Then a "varvanta" (grinding stone) is wrapped like a baby. Then the atya (fathers sister) and maushi (mothers sister) then exchange this wrapped varvanta below and above the paalna (cradle). After the this same way baby is exchanged below and above the paalna (cradle). Other pair of female relativesthen she do the same. The atya then keeps the baby in the paalna and utters baby's name in baby's ear. During this entire ceremony elderly ladies of the house sing the paalna songs. Then boiled chane (black gram) is destributed to the children. The relatives give gifts to the baby. Masala milk is served to the guest. From the day the baby is born till the 10th day there is 'suyer'(means one can not perform puja and other religious ceremonies) to the husbands side family. If the baby is baby boy then instead of 10 days the 'suyer' is for 11 days. After 40 days on an auspicious day the mommy and baby are taken to the husbands house.
